    Mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases are a large class ofproteins involved in signal transduction pathways, which areactivated by a range of stimuli and mediate a number ofphysiological and pathological changes in the cell. Dual specificityphosphatases (DUSPs) are a subclass of the protein tyrosinephosphatase (PTP) gene superfamily, which are selective fordephosphorylating critical phosphothreonine andphosphotyrosine residues within MAP kinases. DUSP geneexpression is induced by a host of growth factors and/or cellularstresses, thereby negatively regulating MAP kinase superfamilymembers including MAPK/ERK, SAPK/JNK and p38. DUSP26, alsodesignated LDP4, MKP8, NATA1 and SKRP3, is ubiquitouslyexpressed in brain except in the hippocampus. DUSP26dephosphorylates p38 thereby inhibiting p38-mediated apoptosisin anaplastic thyroid cancer cells. Downregulation of DUSP26 mayalso contribute to malignant phenotypes of glioma.

Inhibits MAP kinase p38 by dephosphorylating it and inhibits p38-mediated apoptosis in anaplastic thyroid cancer cells. Can also induce activation of MAP kinase p38 and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK).
